Cape Cod and Islands Sep-26-2011

Report Date: Cape Cod and Islands Sep-26-2011

After the unwanted summer doldrums, the fishing scene has really become active in the last week or so. False Albacore, “ Albies” , are the big news. More of them in more locations in bigger sizes than we’ve seen for several years. Basically, they can be found at any of your typical shore locations from Lobsterville east all the way to Cape Poge and down to Wasque. The hot spots vary from day to day, but there are fish here in big numbers! Favorite lures are the same as days gone by: Deadly Dicks, Marias and our own Hammers, especially in the 1 oz size. By the way, boaters are having a field day too.

On a parallel note, the elusive Bonito are here big time also, but it is mostly a boating scene. The Hooter has been hot for weeks, with only a few bad days. There are a few being taken in the Lobsterville bowl/ Menemsha jetty area from the beach, but the Derby entries have been very few until the last few days.

Blues are scattered and not the tackle busting size that we lure manufacturers love to see. There hasn’t been too much of a consistency in their patterns for the shore anglers. Best bet is to scout the East beach area from Poge to the Rip. Check the flood tide at the Rip inside the backwater seam; it’s been producing on both tin and surface lures.

Stripers are a night scene. Lots of bait fishermen doing OK. Live eels out west [ Menemsha], Bunker and Squid on the bottom at the other end of MVY. The Norton Point breach has been producing some nice fish, 20 plus pound class. Slack water at the top and bottom of the tides have been best there. We had a great time with the disabled veterans who were hosted by Bob and Sarah Nixon and staff from the Beach Plum Inn. Five days of fishing, touring, gourmet dining and nonstop grins were enjoyed by all. The vets even pegged some Derby board placing; Carla with a 10 plus lb Blue on Tues took a second for the day. Emmanuel with a 36 lb plus Striper is the current boat Bass leader!! Roberts presented each veteran with a Patriots Special 2 ¼ oz Ranger painted in red, white and blue as we thanked them one and all for what they have sacrificed for our country.

Don’t for get to register for your saltwater license; a few fellows had Derby class fish but had neglected that important task.

See you on the beach!
