Cape Cod and Island 24-Jun-2011

Report Date: Cape Cod and Island 24-Jun-2011

The Striper run of June 2011 is in full swing with both boat and shore fishing looking good. Admittedly, the shore fishing is primarily a night scene, but what’s new? But it isn’t all nights either. I had a fishing tour yesterday afternoon and stumbled on schoolies busting bait by the Cape Poge lighthouse bluffs in the early afternoon. It turns out they had been there for hours and we had them for a long while also. Only left when the party had to return. Only one other buggy crew there with us too. Brings back memories of days gone by! My neighbor in Vineyard Haven launched his 22 ft fishing machine and motored to Devil’s Bridge at the west end of the island yesterday. He scored on big Bass and plentiful Blues. Have heard all kinds of reports about good fishing around the rocks on the north side –Makonikey, Spring Point, etc. In summary, good fishing. Favored lures are Yozuri darters and needlefish from various manufacturers—AfterHours in the Blurple is our personal favorite -perfect action and you can’t destroy them

.

To top it all off, the Blues blitzed this afternoon at Wasque ! All of this is welcome news after the cold weather shut down the fishery a two weeks ago.

Protected birds are causing the shutdown of several beach access points: the chicks will fledge in a short while. Please continue to observe the bird exclusion areas and other restrictions.

You have all probably heard of the monster Stripers being caught in the Canal and RI. Plenty of big fish here too but no monsters [yet]. Several of us are concerned at the shortage of small Bass for the third year in a row. Apparently reflects the low recruitment numbers in the hatchery areas south of us. If anyone has any info on this situation, I and others here would love to hear from you.

Tight lines!

Bob Wasque
